Crisp packets are a metallised plastic film. St Albans' black recycling bin can't take plastic film, bags or wrappers, so crisp packets belong in general waste.
Getting it right
The same rule covers sweet wrappers, chocolate wrappers and other shiny film.
Don't put them in the black recycling bin — film tangles the sorting machinery.
Some supermarkets have soft-plastic collection points that accept clean crisp packets, if you'd rather divert them.
